
Luanda — Angola reported 141 new cases of cholera in the past 24 hours, with the provinces of Luanda, Bengo, Icolo and Bengo, Cuanza-Sul, and Malanje accounting for the majority of these cases. The Ministry of Health’s bulletin states that three deaths were reported in Luanda, two in the Kilamba-Kiaxi municipality, and one in Sambizanga within the past 24 hours.
92 of the 141 cases that were reported came from Luanda, 30 from Bengo, 13 from Icolo and Bengo, 4 from Cuanza-Sul, and 2 from Malanje, according to the paper. Throughout the study period, 266 patients with the illness were admitted to hospitals, and 120 individuals were medically discharged. There have been 3,543 cases reported since the outbreak started, in the first week of January 2025: 1,753 in Luanda, 1,297 in Bengo, 446 in Icolo and Bengo, 20 in Cuanza-Sul, seven in Malanje, six in Huambo, the same number in HuÃla, five in Zaire, two in Cuanza-Norte, and one in Cunene. The cases range in age from two to one hundred years.
There have been 117 fatalities, including 55 in Luanda, 45 in Bengo, 15 in Icolo and Bengo, and two in Cuanza-Sul, throughout this time. The age group most afflicted is two to five years old, with 544 cases and 17 confirmed deaths. Ten to fourteen years old, with 458 cases and eight deaths, is next in line. A cholera vaccination campaign has been in place in Angola since February 3rd in an effort to prevent and fight the disease.
As a result of new cases of the disease in other places, the target number of people who needed to be vaccinated grew to 1,079,476 from the 930,572 that the aforementioned campaign targeted.
In the provinces of Luanda (626,079), Icolo and Bengo (228,058), and Bengo (71,436), 925,573 people have received vaccinations thus far.
The primary symptoms of cholera, a small intestinal infection brought on by the vibrio cholerae bacteria, include cramping in the muscles, vomiting, and watery diarrhea.
