Nairobi— Over 200 more Kenyan police personnel landed in Haiti on Saturday as part of the East African nation’s United Nations-backed mission to combat violent gangs that have taken over areas of the unstable Caribbean nation.
Among other high-ranking government officials, Hatian President Fritz Alphonse Jean welcomed them.
The officers’ duties in Haiti include maintaining public order, protecting people, and helping to strengthen and reform local law enforcement agencies.
Additionally, President William Ruto voiced optimism in achieving enduring peace in the war-ravaged Haiti in June of last year while welcoming the first 400 police officers to the United Nations-led peace operation.
President Ruto informed the officers that their selection as members of the peace mission team was based on their professionalism, ethics, and ability.
Along with patrols, the officers are also responsible for community policing, training, and overseeing Haitian law enforcement officers.
Despite the challenges, Haitian local security and stability have been enhanced thus far by Kenyan law enforcement. In certain places, their efforts have decreased violent crime, enhanced community relationships, and bolstered local law enforcement’s skills.
Because of the Kenyan police’s professionalism and commitment to their work, many Haitians like and respect them.
